Kyria Wright

Kyria has been drawn to mud and making from an early age, so a lifelong love of clay came naturally. She graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 1999 with a degree in Ceramics, exhibiting during that time with Fired Earth at Rufford Mill and Hatfield House. She later spent many years teaching Design and Technology in secondary schools, shaping creativity in others before stepping back to focus on family.

During lockdown, Kyria started exploring mixed media, particularly textiles and Gelli printing, producing a series of abstract collages. These experiments eventually led her back to ceramics, with a renewed desire to translate these layered print processes onto clay surfaces.

Inspired by everyday surroundings — the colours of garden flowers, architectural details glimpsed while travelling, or the spontaneity of marks on paper — Kyria creates richly decorative ceramic pieces using a range of printmaking techniques. Mono printing with coloured slips, and transfers, she embraces experimentation. Opening the kiln after a final firing is always exciting and a bit of a surprise; to see how different colours and techniques have responded to each other. Each finished piece is therefore entirely individual.
