Sue Johnson

I am a mixed media artist based in Uppingham, Rutland, working from a purpose-built home studio. My practice explores shape, colour and texture through abstract and semi-abstract compositions.
With a background in Printed Textiles, I worked internationally as a freelance designer and exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, London and across Europe. I have also taught on BA Textiles courses, including at De Montfort University in Leicester, for over 20 years.
Working primarily with acrylics, I build layered surfaces using collage, mark-making and drawn elements. I often incorporate repurposed papers and fragments from old books, revealing traces of their history.
My process is intuitive and playful, creating unexpected relationships between forms, textures, bringing together elements that might not otherwise belong.
