Bill Blyth

Bill Blyth has been working with timber in various ways for over 40 years. A life of challenging himself and training others to understand how trees grow and are managed. Now he focuses on creating beautiful handcrafted functional art to last. 

“Each piece of timber is as different as each individual tree, working with and learning about all kinds of wood is a privilege and a challenge.”

“I want to capture something of the age and history of the timber. There is a natural appeal in these materials, the shapes and forms are there, but it’s also a struggle to create what I see in them. I can’t just pick it up and say ‘this is what I’ll make’.”

“I have timber around me as I work, I’ll be walking past a piece for quite some time, maybe weeks or months, before it’ll tell me what I want to make with it. I have an idea in my head but then as I work with it the timber dictates what I do – bringing these elements together, that’s the creative process.”

From small and large sculptures through fine furniture for the house to bespoke garden benches and tables. Created with locally sourced timber, working with local tree surgeons and individuals to make beautiful features for the home from individual trees.
