Open Studio

Myself and Maxine Dodd look forward to welcoming you to our host, Derek Brittan's, studio where we will be showcasing examples of our mixed media work. 

Step into my world where wobbly lines win. Textiles and mixed media collide in a technicolour love letter to nature's underdogs — the lumpy, the overlooked, the gloriously imperfect. Bright hues clash and cackle together. Stitches wander off-course on purpose. This is work that shrugs off polish and picks up personality instead — proof that beautiful doesn't need to behave.

Maxine's work asks you to watch daily life sprint, pedal and tackle its way across the page. Pen and ink duke it out with watercolour, pastel, gouache and acrylic to capture the sweat, speed and chaos of cycling pelotons, football scrums, rugby line-outs and Saturday-morning Park Run heroics. Expressive, energetic, unmistakably alive — these are portraits of movement that never stand still.

And weaving it all together, our host tells stories cut from other stories. Photo collage becomes narrative art — fragments of found imagery reassembled into scenes that feel both familiar and entirely new, as if memory itself had been snipped up and glued back together with a better ending.

Three artists. Three wildly different languages. One shared appetite for colour, character and the courage to leave things a little bit imperfect.

Come nosy around our studios, ask us daft questions, and fall in love with art that doesn't try too hard. Maybe even take a bit of pigeon merchandise home with you as a keepsake or gift.
