Deborah Baker

I studied fine art at Birmingham Polytechnic from 1991 to 1994. Whilst there I produced predominantly figurative sculptures, drawings, and prints. Soon after leaving art school I had a family and embarked on a career as a primary school teacher. These have kept me busy and occupied, so for many years I didn't produce any artwork at all.

In 2019 a good artist friend of mine persuaded me to share her studio at The Sanctuary Northampton, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made! My children were older and I could escape for a few hours a week and just be creative. I've since left the studio but continue to produce work from home in my spare time. Observational drawing is at the heart of everything I do. My mixed media work is drawing, but drawing with thread and paper.

Subject matter is varied and depends upon whatever I find fascinating at any one time. Subjects have included landscape, flowers, insects, portraits, and more recently figurative works. I like the combination of detailed observed drawing with the abstract and chance elements which come from the materials I choose to use. Joining Open Studios has given me the amazing opportunity to exhibit widely and sell some of my work.
