Art makes life brighter. It gives us hope, heals our hearts, and has the magical power to bring people together.
Marika du Plessis is a self-taught ceramic artist living in the beautiful county of Northamptonshire, England. Born and raised in colourful South Africa, her early days were filled with wonder for flowers which blossomed from watching her florist mother work with blooms
Her stoneware ceramics carry whispers of her roots: lace passed down from her florist mother, pressed into clay alongside delicate leaves and foliage native to South Africa. Every mark, texture, and impression tells a story of connection—between past and present, people and nature.
Marika’s creations have a joyful, organic spirit. From chunky hand-built vessels to whimsical bird sculptures, her work is rich with symbolism and designed to uplift. Each bird and toadstool has its own quirky charm, lovingly shaped and painted in many layers of oxides, underglazes, and glazes. Her birds, in particular, are her heart’s companions—hours are devoted to sculpting their forms, carving tiny details, and choosing colour palettes that sing with personality. Finished with a delicate beaded necklace, they become symbols of love, belonging, and togetherness.
Before becoming a full-time artist, Marika spent many years teaching art, a passion she still holds dear. Today, she shares her love for clay through workshops for both adults and children, creating safe, peaceful spaces where students can relax, learn, and rediscover their creative spark.
Her whimsical world extends beyond clay into painting—vibrant oil works on linen canvas that celebrate magical birds, flowers, and toadstools. With each brushstroke, she hopes to spark joy, peace, and a sense of wonder in those who view her art.
For Marika, creating is more than making—it’s about blessing others with beauty, joy, and connection. Every piece she shapes is an invitation to pause, smile, and feel the quiet magic of nature.
