A selection of alla prima portraits

These paintings are examples of my alla prima or direct painting of portraits. I don't use grids, tracing paper or projectors, I paint directly with the brush onto a blank canvas and I paint wet-on-wet, that is layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint. This is a fast way of working in oil paint as I'm not waiting for the first layers of oil paint to have dried. It's great fun, but challenging as working with wet oil paint is not always easy and controllable!
