Art at the Alex is based in a Victorian former pub, in Rugby town centre. Since 2022 this quaint
building has developed into a small art centre, with galleries, artist studios, cafe and garden. We run
events and exhibitions throughout the year (see website https://artatthealex.com). Our emphasis is
on showing work by local artists and makers, providing space where they can teach or work, and
raising the profile of artist activity in Rugby.
The owners of the Alex building are Steve Davies (printmaker) and Chris
Pegler (spinner, weaver and dyer) who both have their studios here. This is
the Alex's first year as a NROS venue, but will be its fourth year as part of
Warwickshire Open Studios and the national Heritage Open Days (HOD)
programme. As HOD takes place during September you can enjoy aspects
of that activity while visiting during NROS.
Art at the Alex is the physical hub for the Rugby Artists and Makers Network, so expect to see 3D
artwork as well as 2D work here, also expect to meet artists (often at work) whenever you visit.
Since the start Art at the Alex has provided studio space to its resident owners: Steve Davies (printmaker) and Chris Pegler (fibre artist). In late 2024 photographer John Thompson took over part of the Brewery buildings as his studio. In March 2025 ceramicist Belinda Edwards will be moving in with her kiln into a separate space. Also for 2025, Chris has revamped her ‘Kitchen Studio’ and Steve has improved his ‘Print Room’ studio space. They are also working on plans to create more studio space in the Pavilion. Hoping to have six artists studios here by the end of the year. Find out more about our current studio holders here.
