Paintings inspired by the Tour de France

These images are made either as pen and ink sketches from live TV feed or in the studio from the sketches for larger pieces. The race is a great inspiration for me as it is about endurance and huge determination to complete each day. Each cyclist works to a strict regime to achieve and maintain their fitness and to be able to compete.

The race also excites fans like me for the same reasons. They turn out at the roadside for hours until the spectacle comes by, the trucks, cars and the cyclists themselves. The experience lasts a few seconds really and yet the anticipation brings great happiness. Towns and villages are often bedecked with flags, bikes and cycling art. The scenes are colorful, happy, and energetic.

This energy and joy are the elements I portray in my Tour de France drawings and paintings. If you have witnessed a cycle race, the scenes are immediately recognizable.
