Description

Learn traditional stone setting techniques with the very talented Stephen Barnett.

On this 2 day course Stephen will cover:

Day 1 – Marquis stone setting (rub over and claw)

In this first one day session you will you will develop your knowledge and understanding the theory and practice of setting marquise cut stones into commonly used settings.

Stephen will complete a tutor demonstrations to show you how to set a Marquise cut stone into both a rub-over and claw style setting.

You will understand how to measure your stone size, how to mark out for cutting the seat and how to actually cut the seat and set the stone. Following this, you will practice these techniques under Stephens’ supervision.

Day 2 – Grain setting (star, grain and thread & grain)

In this one day introduction to grain setting techniques you will learn how to set small stones in a selection of styles.

We will start with a simple single stone grain set before moving on to a traditional star setting and finally a row of three stones in a thread and grain style setting.

During the day we will also look at considerations for grain setting as well as the preparation of tools and possible applications.

In classes we will be setting into silver castings so you can leave either with a ring to wear or to carry on practising adding stones to.

You can book your space online at http://www.beccygillatt.com/1-day-courses.

***Learners must be competent in using jewellery tools, have a strong grip and good hand dexterity. Graver work can be hard on your hands. Some stone setting experience would be an advantage. Good eyesight is also essential as the tasks require very small details to be seen, use of optivisors is recommended.

All materials are included in the course fee.

If you would like to purchase more ring castings and or gravers before the session please contact Beccy for a price list.
