Helna Merin Joseph is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist and art educator based in Northampton, UK. Working across sculpture, painting, and photography, her vibrant practice explores themes of gender, identity, and social paradoxes. Originally from India, Helna holds a Master’s in Fine Arts (Sculpture) from the University of Hyderabad, where she earned first rank with a Gold Medal and a first rank with distinction for her Bachelor's from Kerala University.
Known for her dynamic wood relief sculptures featuring bold acrylic colors, rough textures, and decorative elements, Helna’s work has been exhibited at major platforms including Lokame Tharavad (2021), the Kochi-Muziris Students’ Biennale (2017, 2021), Art District XIII, and Gallery Dot Walk. Her solo shows, Solitary Reaper and Solitude, gained critical attention early in her career.
Now drawing from her experiences in the UK, Helna's recent sustainable project, Walking Histories, reflects on Northampton’s shoemaking legacy. She is also the founder of House of Woodpecker, an initiative inspired by her students, supporting creative learning and community arts.
