I studied theatre design and then developed a 'one off' textile screen printing business, hand printing on silks and velvets using bright coloured designs vaguely organic with an insect scattered here and there.
Recently I have gone back to theatre ideas where entertainment is a primary theme - either through imagination or situation such as circus.
The circus theme is strong this 2024 year where I am promoting the 'How to Make' kits. These are an introduction to sculpture and modelling. Layers of paper built up on a core of geometric shapes allow the individual to create their own individual character.
The making process is where the ideas spark and I use model-making methods to clarify my objective. This is a very immersive process. I find things happen subconsciously. I want a dynamic within the each piece of work. So it might be in the subject (a travel item - a boat) or visual lines (curls and swirls).
